New E. coli outbreak caused more hospitalizations than other outbreaks.
With the current E. coli outbreak linked to fresh spinach leaving more people hospitalized than previous outbreaks, health officials are wondering whether there is a more potent strain of the organism at play. Fully 50% of people reported sick from the latest strain have been hospitalized, compared to 25% to 30% of people hospitalized in other E. coli outbreaks.   The Arizona Republic (Phoenix) / Associated Press
